When you eat, do you eat?
Or are you worried
about the carbs,
the fat,
the weight you’ll gain?

When you put food into your mouth,
do you find pleasure in what you eat?
Or do you count
the calories you put into your body?

When you nourish your body,
do you actually realize that you’re nourishing her?

Or are you terrified of what you’re doing?

Do you see food or do you see calories?

If all you think about when you think of food
is calories,
it’s time for you
to re-learn what food really is.

Food is not the enemy.
Food is not calories.
Food is not just something you have to restrict in order to shape your body in a certain way.

Food is not just about the number you see on the scale.

Food is pleasure.
Food is love.
Food is nourishment on the deepest of levels.

Or it can be.

If food is everything you have in life,
of course,
it’s not love,
it’s an obsession.

If calories are everything you think about in life,
of course,
it’s not healthy,
it’s killing your soul.

If you tell yourself,
over and over and over again,
that your body is simply a calorie burning machine,
that whenever you put food in your mouth you either make or break your life,

you are lying to yourself,
you are believing in outdated science,
you are living in hell –
on purpose.

And it hurts.
Doesn’t it?

It doesn’t hurt in a good way,
even if that is what you’re telling yourself.

It fucking hurts.

The constant adding,
the constant counting,
the never-ending terror in your mind.

And remember how there was a time in your life where food wasn’t just calories?
Where food was something that gave you joy?

A time when you ran after the ice-cream truck knowing that it wasn’t just the ice-cream that thrilled you, but the entire experience?

A time where you weren’t at war with your body,
but lived in harmony with what your body did for you
and what you could create together?

A time where life was simple,
where food was fun,
where your body was your friend?

Even if you say, you don’t remember,
you never had a time like this,
there were moments,
of course there were.

One of my earliest memories was feeling like I was starving on vacation
when everybody else was playing on the beach.

I must’ve been 4 or 5.

I was aware of food,
of what to eat,
when to eat,
that I couldn’t always eat
or something bad would happen.

But before then,
I am sure I was at peace with food.

You had those times too,
don’t fool yourself.

So, breathe in,
breathe out,
and remember.

If you really can’t,
imagine what it’s like to taste food again –
not see calories.

Imagine what it’s like to eat
when you eat,
instead of counting when you chew.

Remember
or imagine
what it’s like to come home.

Even if every inch of you is terrified –
scared of what’s going to happen
if you let go of counting
of adding
of measuring,

even if every inch of you wants to recoil,
even if you want to run away,

lean in.

Do it for your life.
For the countless minutes, hours, weeks and years
that you’re going to gain
by transforming your way of seeing food.

Trust me,
trust me,

but mostly,
trust yourself.

There is more to life
than this.

There is more to life
than eating protein bars,
salads,
shakes.

There is more to life than beating yourself up
because you you went over your daily calorie amount
by 2 calories.

There is more to life than thinking about food.

But you have to be willing to find it.
Are you willing?

Or are calories your religion,
your God?

Are calories the one thing keeping you alive,
making you feel at peace,
at home?

If they are,
right now,
that can change.

It will change.

It will take time,
going deep,
seeing that you are the light,
the light of your life,
and that you can
and will –
if you want-
turn it around.

Give yourself one more dance.
Or a billion more.

Give yourself one more change.
Or a billion more.

Give yourself one more experience of
realizing the pleasure you can gain from eating what you want
when you want.
And then a billion more of those experiences.

Just imagine never having to count calories again.
Just imagine the freedom you’ll experience where you’re truly free from your obsession with exactly what you eat.
Just imagine who you can be –
will be –
once you let go of this terror from within.

Just imagine how grand your life,
your daily experience,
will be.

Don’t say that you can’t do it.

Don’t say that it’s not for you.
Don’t say that you are different.
Don’t say that you are a lost cause.

Don’t say it.
You’re wrong.
Flat out wrong.

It is possible for you.
This life,
this freedom of mind,
this peace of your heart,
is in your future,
is in your cards.

You may have to weather some storms,
but they won’t be as violent as the storm you’re facing right now.

You may have to surrender to your pain,
but it won’t be as painful as the suffering you’re experiencing now.

You may have to admit to your power,
and that may be the hardest part of it all.

But once you realize,
truly get,
that food is not the enemy,
that calories aren’t God,
that your body is more than a calorie burning machine
and that you will thrive in life
much more than now
once you allow yourself to see food as food again,

you will not want to turn back.

Ever again.

Go back to the day you met yourself,
to the day you began inhabiting your body,

and begin to respect your body the way you did back then.

You did love your body once.
You did love food – in a healthy and respectful way.
You were totally crazy about yourself.

You were.

Knowing this, you can always come right back home.
