Raise your hand if you’ve ever been in a discovery call where the entire session was about the ego of the coach?

You feel that the entire session is about the coach making sure you say yes to working with her – instead of it being about you and what you need at this point in your transformation journey.

I’ve been there, and it feels awful. I once purchased a 7k program, not because I felt it was right for me, but because I felt backed into a corner and didn’t know how to get out of the conversation (it didn’t occur to me that I could just say no and hang up the call). Needless to say, this program didn’t work out for me – it could have been the best program in the world, but it started with me feeling pressured instead of uplifted and empowered.

I dislike these tactics. I have no sympathy for these kinds of pressure patterns.

AND I know that these are not the genuine, hard-working, people-focused coaches that are in the majority.

But how do you know if a coach is right?

It’s a process that requires intuition, research, and a bit of trial and error. Here are a few tips to help you figure out if a coach is a good fit for you and your transformation journey.

Listen to your gut

First and foremost, listen to your gut. Your intuition is a powerful tool in assessing whether the energy and values of a coach align with yours. If something feels off during the initial conversations, it’s likely a sign that this person isn’t the right fit for you. Remember, coaching is a deeply personal experience, and you should feel comfortable, respected, and understood.

Does the coach ask questions?

Secondly, look for a coach who prioritizes understanding your needs and goals over selling their program. A good coach asks questions – lots of them. They’re genuinely curious about you, your challenges, and what you hope to achieve. They should be focused on creating a journey that fits your individual needs, instead of pushing a one-size-fits-all solution.

What do the testimonials say?

Additionally, seek out testimonials and feedback from former clients. While every coaching journey is unique, hearing about the experiences of others can provide insight into the coach’s methods. Pay attention to stories that resonate with your goals and see if former clients felt heard, supported, and empowered.

Transparency is key.

A trustworthy coach is open about their methods, what you can expect from the coaching process, and any qualifications or experience they have. They should be willing to discuss the framework of their program and how it can be tailored to fit you. If a coach is vague about their approach or avoids answering your questions directly, it might be a red flag.

What about her own growth?

Finally, consider the coach’s commitment to their own growth. The best coaches are those who are continuously learning, evolving, and applying new insights into their practice. They’re not only teaching, but they’re also students of life and their profession. A coach who is passionate about their own development is more likely to be committed to yours.

Finding the right coach may take time, but it’s worth the effort. The right coach can transform your journey. They will provide not just guidance but also the support and accountability you need to thrive. Remember, a coach’s role is to bring out the best in you, not to overshadow your journey with their ego. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to finding a coach who can truly help you achieve your goals.
