mother

Mother-daughter-relationships can be beautiful, tricky, complex, awesome, challenging, hurtful, peaceful, empowering and more and more and more.

Mothers, daughters, body image issues and self-love creates an entirely new level of complexity.

There are a billion opinions out there saying that the main contributor to children’s eating disorders and body image struggles is the MOM. While we totally disagree with that sexist view of how struggles with food and the body are born, looking back at your relationship with your mom can open up a wonderful mixture of awareness and healing around your own connection to dieting and weight – without sinking to a level of blame and shame.

In my own healing journey, I uncovered many limiting decisions and false beliefs around my body and food that came from my mother’s words and actions. I was able to see how her relationship with her body influenced my own view of how to shape and form my own shape.

Mothers act on what they think is best

I also came to learn that the way she was taught to look at weight, obesity and dieting was an outdated and immensely painful way of living with your body – the vessel to your dreams.

Disconnecting from your family’s point of view around these oh so important topics in our society is a big step and one that may come with heartache and inner turmoil, but it’s an essential one if you are determined to leave your own inner dieting hell behind.

Mothering yourself – the most transforming self-care tool there is

Once you begin to walk on your path to freedom, you’ll also find that in many ways, you’ll need to mother yourself. Some of us need to learn what mothering oneself even looks like. I certainly had no idea.

So I began to listen to what I needed when I was freaked out, when I was feeling lonely and lost and I gave myself exactly what it was I needed: a stern talking, a lovely mantra, a big, long, loving hug.

Mothering yourself and healing your mother wound are essential strategies on the way out of diet prison. You’ll master them once you begin to practice them.
